Essential oils, in essence are quite safe to use and can offer great benefits to users. However, it is important to keep in mind safe use guidelines of these concentrated essential oils.

As a general rule about Essential Oils:

Do not use essential oils internally

Do not apply directly to skin – rather dilute with carrier oil

Some may use milder essential oils like Lavender directly on skin, however many may find skin sensitivity even with Lavender. Dilution with a carrier oil is recommended of these highly concentrated essential oils.

Keep out of reach of children

Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes

Use only pure essential oils

Store the oils properly

Proper storage increases longevity of the essential oils and reduces the risk rancidity and degradation.  Essential oils in general have a shelf life of one to three years. Some oils such as sandalwood, and patchouli actually get better with age. Citrus oils should be used within one year as they are prone to degradation. Fatty carrier oils should be refrigerated to prevent rancidity.
